Title: Eng V Aus V NZ T20 series
Post by: FattusCattus on January 24, 2018, 08:47:12 AM
I see Sam Curran has just been called up to the squad. Undoubted talent and potential there I'm sure - but would we say he's the next cab off the rank?

Not yet, but I imagine they just want to give him a taste of international cricket.

Does he? In terms of producing players for England it's only been in the last 18 months where it's been noticeable, and even then Stoneman is a Surrey product.

It would appear that young Mr Dawson is enjoying himself in the T20 warm up match - good on him!

An opportunity for a few fringe players to stake a claim it would seem.

i know its not a t20i however this isnt an especially weak bowling attack for the pmxi

73 off 32 balls - go on son!!!!

I'm pretty sure someone clever like me suggested he was better used up the order and a fill-in bowler.

Only problem is, who out of Roy, Bairstow, Hales, Morgan, Root, Stokes, Buttler would you bat him ahead of?

Actually, put like that, the argument for Root missing T20 outside global comps to concentrate on other formats is quite compelling.
Title: Re: Eng V Aus V NZ T20 series
Post by: ppccopener on February 02, 2018, 08:15:35 PM
Root didn't get picked in he IPL before agreeing a rest with England, I'm sure he wanted the chance to make money and no one can blame him, Morgan, butler, stokes have all played recently.

But I just cannot see root playing all 3 formats. In the standard one day team you could argue he is our best player,to pace a one day innings, but he's not really a big hitter.

Could be wrong but focus will soon be on the WC in 2019, and a packed test schedule next year.

England needed to handle Root carefully, he is a diamond.

Funny how warner's method of relentless slogging isn't working since they reduced the dimensions of bats. Warner lacks skills and it was the bat that made him look decent.

If you look at a lot of his dismissals this winter he’s been out prodding outside off not slogging, I’d say it was more him being more defensive rather than playing his natural attackingg game that has been his down fall

Malan looks like he's sorted the 'toppling over to a full ball' issue he had. Starting to look a very classy addition to the team and scoring at a fair lick with proper shots. That first 6 he flipped off his legs was dreamy

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result!

Chahal and kuldeep haven’t been carted yet, when they do they will change!

Are you seriously saying that any spinner will keep tossing it up when being smashed?

Mate you need to seriously open you’re eyes pal!

I assume you’re not a bowler? If you were you’d know that you have to change it up when being hit!

Willey was the only one bowling in areas similar to the Aussies and had success as a result. It's a shame he got blasted in his final over but Finch was amped as soon as he got on the field and it was clear there was no stopping him. Schooled all around today

TBF, the captain's injured and 'the best allrounder in the world' only has himself to blame.

England have to learn to win games without a couple of key players. A few people need to step up to the mark - Buttler as captain for one.

Malan once again proving how valuable he is becoming.

When are England going to realise that sending Jordan up the order is a lousy plan at international level? Waste of 5 balls every time, ow he bats ahead of Rashid and particularly Plunkett in these situations is beyond me.

Yaaawkshire, yaaawkshire sorry, you mean Bairstow who's played 4 T20Is since 2013?? I'd suggest Moeen is more of a miss, feel we're a batsman light this series, especially with the top order mostly not firing.

Just because he isn't getting picked, doesn't mean he is not one of the best.

He played 3 games in 2017, averaging 67 and a strike rate of around 144.  His "lowest" score was 27.

Where does Bairstow fit in England's best t20 side (other than about 17th choice)? Also that isn't really what I was getting at - daft to say anyone is 'missing' from a side they don't usually play in. You think Sheffield Collegiate get in the bar after a loss and go 'never mind boys, we'd have done much better if we weren't missing Vaughan and the Root lads'?

I'm sure they would have done better because they would have had better players in, the only reason was that they area better team.  question: How many times do you hear of supporters saying that their best players are taken for England and that is affecting the county's results. Answer: all the time

Bairstow could fit anywhere in the top 7, easily.

It's not his fault that the selectors don't pick him, but you can still say that they'd do better with him.  He'll be picked in the team as soon as Morgan steps down as captain.

Debateable - there is a valid argument that he would have to unseat one of Root or Buttler, though I think the same argument that saw him pass Hales in the one day side could apply.

Complication is, I like how Malan bats in t'hit n giggle...

Some nice hitting.

Moaners will Claim “flat track” and “small boundaries”. But I’d like to see them maintain it for the full 20 overs of a chase.
Not that simple when pressures on.

Anyway. I like this D’Arcy short guy. Got something about him. The next david Warner?? Or even better?
How long until a big sponsor snaps him up?

If we are playing at the same ground as the Aussies did all bets off how many we could concede.

250 within reach !

I hope someone got Ben Wheeler a pint or two. Poor chap got the beating of his life 3.1 overs 64 runs...

I guess now that the "big bats" scapegoat is discredited, Ponting and co will push for maximum muscle sizes?

50m boundary’s??

The simple fact is if you have 50m boundaries and a motorway of a pitch where the ball doesn't move off the straight , this is going to happen.

Wheeler was actually a tad unlucky, his 1st over against Short went 18 and not one was a bad ball and Short didn't middle one of them, including a genuine outside edge that went for 6 into the stands!

I do think it was a tad silly though.... by this I mean Short must have had 40ish before he actually middled one.

I don’t see an issue.... The game is about hitting boundaries and hitting as many as possible.... And both teams have to play on the same wicket/same ground

As No:4 says.. this format is about smashing runs each ball.. it’s what everyone wants

If you want balance between bat and ball don’t watch 2020

Malan has done well since he came in, would like to see Morgan get a significant score- he has not done a great deal in the last 12 months

Must suck to get out like that...what was Butler thinking!

Was that a good ball or a really bad shot from Butler?

Love Eoin Morgan’s SF - wonky stickers, tatty, grip riding up & easy to buy off eBay for under £40

Think i’ve seen enough now to be sure that Billings is bobbins at this level. Number 6 isn’t an easy slot in T20 but he’s hardly shown anything in plenty of chances here.

Pretty poor effort from guptill so far.
He’s got England back in this game by batting at less than a run a ball

Credit to Dawson

Rubbish

He played for the 174 and saw his team home. NZ didn’t really bother chasing the game until the 174 was secured. Guptil played it well, just stay in and bat the majority of the overs and 174 on these grounds will happen. See off the only threat in spin and boom.

NZ schooled England

England win a t20! More down to Giorgio watching the 175 score rather than the 195. But a win is a win.

Best side?

Presume stokes comes in for billings at some point.
How do we get whales and root back in??

Root to open for hales? Seeing as he’s well out of form......

140kph and our only bowler capable of actually bowling yorkas ? Tbf he’s not bad at the white ball format.

Tricky isn't it? Six bowlers is much easier on the captain than five, so you are picking six from Roy, Hales, YJB, Root, Malan, Morgan, Stokes and Buttler (Billings may be done). If we're managing workload, I'd leave out the two tykes, if we're picking best XI it's tough.

I am not particularly worried about this T20i Tri-series for a few reasons....

1. NZ are always a very good white ball side
2. Australia are a completely different side at this time of year when they can call on players that have been playing on BBL for 6/8 weeks solid.
3. The majority of our best players aren't playing!

The side that played the 2016 World T20 final is below -

Roy, Hales, Root, Morgan, Butler, Stokes, Ali, Jordan, Willey, Plunkett, Rashid.

So not playing in this series are Root, Ali and Stokes. You could add to that now Woakes and possibly Bairstow. Plus we have found that Malan is a very good T20i player.

So not all bad.

Sorry how is that rubbish. Munro broke the back of the chase in the first 6 overs. They required 8rpo thereafter -6.5rpo for the 175 target.
The next 6-7 overs saw the rate jump to 12s. They had plenty of firepower down the order to cruise to the 175 target

“NZ didn’t really bother chasing the game until the 174 was secured“ - think the first 6 overs disagree with your point here

Go watch it again.. watch guptils approach and then how they as a team go about playing Rashid and Dawson. Munro only has one way. Then come back and suggest that their plan was to simply ensure they got 174.

If you disageee then we shall agree to disagree.

Hard luck for England. Some of the batsmen gave away wickets cheaply. New Zealand bowlers showed a lot of class to reign in England scoring rate in some overs. NZ played smart cricket.
