Knocking with Lignum Vitae Mallet
« on: September 07, 2017, 09:46:51 PM »

Do you know the same way as you do with a regular mallet?
Is there any special trick while using this mallet which will prevent damage and reduce knocking time?
Are there any posts or videos I might have missed?

Without stating the obvious you wouldn't hit/swing the LV mallet as hard as you would with an ash/oak one. The best thing to do is use shorter swings and use the weight of the mallet head. I find it quite difficult to knock in the toe using one. You have to be extremely careful with the LV. Go very slow and very careful - a general rule for most aspects in life.

Do you own an LV mallet? Let me know how you fare. I use my $10 GN mallet to knock my bats and they turn out fine. I stayed away from LV because of potential for damage to a bat. I could also get a (same weight) rubber mallet from HOme Depot for cheaper and it'd require the same amount of care and dexterity.

I have used both GN mallet and LV. LV mallets outcome is much better but you need to be very careful.

I've got a LV Mallet and don't really do anything differently. Haven't had any issues at all with any compression cracks. I use a hammer all the time at work though so have good control, if you aren't used to using one go easy at first until you get used to it

Have a knocking video using my LV and some others on my page (https://www.facebook.com/MarcsCricketBatPrepInformation/)

Key is that it is the hardness of LV that does the work, not the weight, so take it easy initially as the willow will indent regardless of press.

It's nothing to do with its weight, that is merely due to its incredible density and hardness. Only people in a rush damage their bats.

Having knocked in more than my fair share of bats, using both a cheap readers mallet and an LV mallet, I've never had an issue that I've damaged a bat knocking it in. As long as you don't start off by going at the willow like a bat out of hell you shouldn't experience any issues.

The LV mallet doesn't require so much force in the swing to create an indent in the willow, but due to the weight knocking in for a prolonged period isn't as easy on your arm as with a lighter mallet.

As for a rubber mallet, it may weigh the same but the LV mallet works so effectively because of the hardness and density of the material rather than the weight.

If hardness and density is the factor, why not use a light iron hammer to knock a bat? There is a video of Sehwag with a hammer in his hand knocking a bat.
