Great White 5 fin Review. PICS UP!!
« on: February 16, 2012, 09:11:25 PM »

Ok guys so I recieved my Shark bat today and although the light is too poor now for pictures I wanted to get the initial review up for you to read. This was the first bat I've ever purchased blind so to speak other than requesting a weight and as some will know I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to choosing my bats. There's a positives and a few negatives to this review so its not all shiny bat syndrome and smiles but overall I am happy with the purchase.

So first off is a positive, and a BIG one at that - customer service.
Both James and Pete were fantastic to deal with. Quick and easy communication, James here and Pete over the phone. Very helpful and after confirming my order with Pete on the phone the bat was in my posession (well house) before 12:30 the following day, in a full length padded bat cover to boot. :) 9/10

There's also a few bad bits though and unfortunately these are actually on the bat :(
When I took it of the cover I noticed numerous things. 3 sizeable dents down the top edge, caused by a careless courier at a guess with the marks on the indentation. But there's also quite a few nicks and scuffs down the spine and 2 large deep scrapes on the back. One at the top, one near the toe. There's another thing I noticed as well and its the stickers. The bat has obviously had the previous labels on and shark have replaced these with new ones, but havent sanded the glue or staining from the previous stickers so you can see where the old one has been under the New labels.
Without being too harsh it all took the special feeling away from unwrapping a new bat.

However I am not going to sit here slating those things and not mention the good stuff. Which there's plenty of.

First off the willow is gorgeous. 9 straight even grains and the profile is massive for 2.1/. 33mm edges but no concaving whatsoever and the swell is very meaty.
The handle is nice and thick and feels very sturdy without being too stiff.

There's 2 things however that stand out on this bat and its these 2 things that make me confident of the bats ability and make me Think I was just a bit unlucky with the finishing, labels and dents, scrapes.

1 is the Performance, Pete said I would be happy with it and I have to honest the middle is MEGA!!! Although not as long or as forgiving as my blue room I'd say after the mallet test and constant ball striking that without any doubt it will perform

2 is the party piece and the thing I'm most impressed with. Balance and Pickup.
For a bat at 2.10 no concaving and 33mm edges it is beyond words. It picks up like a toothpick. But at the same time it still doesn't feel absent in the hands. I haven't put it down since opening it today and Im still holding back a childish grin in my backlift, its just effortless.

Although this hasn't been the perfect experience by any stretch I'd still put my neck out and say buy a Shark bat. But if you can go to the store and see there, I wish I had now as I bet my issues would be avoided this way and the willow will no doubt be as good if not better when selecting yourself.

Thanks to James and Pete once again.
Ill get the images up tomorrow for everyone.

just to echo what liam has said he came round earlier and i had a look and must have hit a ball with it for a good 10 mins,

middle is fantastic pick up is lovely very nice grains etc,

but the finishing lets it down not sure if it was damaged by the post or if it was just sent like that but if id paid top money for a bat i wouldnt be happy,

but we dont buy are bats to look pretty this is defo a performer!

not 100% sure who makes these bats tho

very square shoulders and a flat face

Just because Salix don't doesn't mean Dan doesn't, though having said that don't remember flat faced vantages either???

Flat face + thick handle sounds like Charlie. Is it flattish/no spine at the toe end? Does it have thick shoulders?

I do make bats for Shark and it does sound like one i have made for him. James has a couple of different profiles, flat faced and not flat faced. Just like to point out also, that Salix dont make bats for shark. I have done work for Salix in the past but the bats i make are just from my own workshop. Glad you like the bat.

Yeah the performance seems very good the pick up is unbelievable though. Just really down about the damage to the back and edges though. It's just not what you expect to find on a new bat. Especially the boutique brands

Of course not, does sound like some crap handling by couriers to me. Very unfortunate.

Yeah probably. Marks on the back are fairly deep as well  :(

Odd though as it was in a full length padded cover during transport too...

Just glad that it goes well .
