Title: Butterfly Willow
Post by: VKS on November 16, 2016, 04:32:05 PM
We've received a delivery of butterfly willow bats from SS TON. Although I've personally never really paid much attention to this type of willow, after reading all the comments on the forum and the general interest levels, I thought we should give them a go.

Further details can be found on our website http://vks.com/store/s-ton-butterfly-willow-cricket-bat/ (http://vks.com/store/s-ton-butterfly-willow-cricket-bat/)

We have also just uploaded a video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_uBJ0KwJP8&t=41s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_uBJ0KwJP8&t=41s)

In terms of weight available, we have some 2.7 and a larger numbers of 2.8 and 2.9

Just to confirm these come blank, with just the TON stamps on the back and edges?

Yes all plain, just the TON stamps...no point in hiding it all behind a load of stickers.

Actually there is nothing wrong with them. I've just bought 4 Bellingham and Smith's. A bit of trimming down the number of bats were required  ;)

Hi Guys - did anyone apart from Mr Taylor end up buying these, and if so, any pics / reviews?

@VKS do you have any of these left in the lighter weights?

Mid to maybe mid-low middle I'd say, got one of these just before xmas and it's some stick for under a ton.

Mines is pretty round, maybe a very slight oval to the bottom hand but if so barely noticeable.

Post by: DorsetDan on January 18, 2017, 02:13:59 PM
I bought the fuller, softer sounding 2lb7oz one from the video. I actually really like the look of the face and the playing area is quite clear with some decent looking grains. I actually don't find the butterfly that firm on this bat and have had seam marks there early on.

Specs...
Max edge: 37-38mm
Max spine: ~60mm
Max toe: 25mm
Min toe: 22mm
Min shoulder: 12mm
Face width: 107mm

Back has a bit more "character" but looks pretty nice in the flesh IMO

Profile is a mid-low to low sweetspot I'd say. The middle is pretty much the middle of the "O" in the picture (the angle of the picture is deceptive), roughly 200mm up from the toe. Back is full with 1mm or less concaving. Handle is forward set with a quite distinct low bow in the blade too so all added up is bowtastic!

There isn't much meat high up and it does feel a touch bottom heavy but is a very light bat at the end of the day. End result is it is easy to get bat speed through a shot and it won't feel like a lump to carry around. The balls seems as good as any out of the middle and low down but does suffer higher up the blade as a trade off.

Weight with a normal chevron was under 2.7 but now I've settled on 3 layers of tape under a GN chevron bringing the weight to 1130g or 2lbs7.9oz if you prefer :)

Handle is pretty much 31mm wide all the way down in the front view...

... and 31mm wide at the top, to 35mm wide at the bottom

It sounds stupid but the handle is the main reason I wanted to try this bat and it feels very natural in the hands. It is semi-oval without getting in the way too much giving a lot of room for the bottom hand to manoeuvre. The combination of low weight, slightly bottom heavy feel and shape of handle means I have been playing more with hands and bat speed than timing/ punching and I think that is the type of person it would suit.

Can't think of anything else to write but I am really enjoying using it, it feels very natural in the hands from the first moment and if I make it to the Southern nets again then feel free to have a go!

Oh, and excellent service and help from Vinay in choosing a bat, knocking it in and the super quick turnaround to get it out ready for the last Southern nets, thanks!

Having had a number of messages regarding Butterfly Willow bats from SS Ton, I am pleased to say we have had a new delivery. The blades look pretty good...well as good as a butterfly willow blade can look i guess. They ping well, which is most important and hopefully the images below will tell it all.

Quite an array of butterfly willow, there.

What is the weight range?
Are they all a similar profile?

Hi,

Are these still round handled? Would definitely purchase if they came in oval.

Thanks!

A round handle can easily be made oval with a few strips of medical tape :)

Just received my butterfly, stain at the top and on the back but the face is clean just looks like your looking at it through frosted glass. Seems to ping well just quite a small and low middle, first go with it tonight in a corporate game where they tend to use awful balls. Very excited to see how it goes.

For your own sake I'd highly recommend not using a brand new bat in a game the same day you've received it, especially if the balls aren't good quality! There's a reason knocking in exists! :(

Apparently they come pre-prepared and have given it another 90 mins last evening just incase. Sheet and edge tape on and were good to go. 90 mins was probably the longest stint ive ever done knocking in but was a good evening of TV so headphones in and was all set

I noticed in nets it has helped me as i was smashing the ball nicely and i felt quite confident as well. ( i changed few other things too)

You won't regret buying one mate, use mine in the nets all the time and a couple of 30-35 retired knocks in corporate games. Surprisingly mine has a very oval handle, i don't know if that's standard though.
