Title: New AS Champ
Post by: Sitonit on August 22, 2018, 05:44:38 PM
Waited for over two years for this cleft to arrive at the factory stock - and I think I kinda got lucky with it. It will be perhaps unfair to ask the factory to churn out these specs on mass scale.

40 mm edges

Zero Concaving

Square toe with thickest central part at 35 mm - Spine runs from toe to handle -

Mid to High Middle for counter balancing

Blemish free, 21 grainer at 2 lbs and 7 Oz

Grade 1+

£155 shipped to USA

I removed the embossed facial stickers which look similar to the ones on the back.

This thing looks absolute solid !!

Has that even been pressed/is it even full width?! Impressive specs, looks a gun. Let us know how you get on with it/If you find out it has a hollow handle and the cleft is hollowed.  :D Good job being so patient for the right bat

Yes, my very first spec was a full 108 mm face.

Yes 2 lbs and 7 Oz and not 2.7 lbs. I am aware of this niggle where many in Asia don't understand the difference.
Will upload the pics on a kitchen scale when I get home.

Yes, I have been buying directly from the factory for quite a few years now. They are based in Sialkot Pakistan and in my experience, they are the best Pakistani bat makers,  but also the most honest businessmen. (way above CA)

You can always reach out to Waqas Khalid. He takes good care of his clients.

Now that is limited edition.

Were u in touch with AS for last 2 years regarding this cleft or did they contacted u by themselves?

Great looking bat.

That's a big bat fro the weight. Have ordered before direct from them twice. First time was a factory shape:  the willow was really good but the handle went after 6 months. Very decent size for the weight. 2nd time, it was a custom (2cm smaller blade). The weight was heavier than I asked for (1225 grams vs 1180 grams or 2lb 11+ vs 2lb 9.5) and slightly concaved. Given the weight and dimensions, was expecting a bigger bat.

The handle quality is still not great. But this one now has 4 rubber inserts.

I think the cleft was exceptionally light - these donít come every day.

They are running a sale and I placed an order for another bat with a bit more humane specs, yet still a little extreme

38 mm edges
108 mm face width
Some concaving
Weight: 2 lbs and 6 Oz

Cost US$150.00 including international shipping.

The bat arrives Nov 28 - will post the pics.

Also can u give me any direction before placing the order. Thanks.

Yes, personally I always recommend AS bats over any other Pakistani brand.

You can send a direct email to waqas@assports.com

Include detail on your bat specs and he will reply back with affirmation

I have also ordered one. Their sale finished on Sunday, I was just in time to get the discounted price

My specs are simple, 2lb 6oz in SH which they promised wont be a problem. Lets see what I get

Top range bat at this price, seems too good to be true

Seems like a few of us have bought during their sale. Can people please post updates here?

I was advised that the bat is being prepared per my request (2lb 6oz in size SH). I made it clear that I don't want 2.6lb :-)

The bat was ready within 4/5 days and was promptly shipped. However, they use some (No Swearing Please) courier service. Tracking is available but never updated. It has been five days since shipment but seems like the parcel is still in Karachi.

However, so far all good. Must say that their communication has been pretty good.  Lets see what I get, when I get it

Mine is here but there is a story behind it.

I had a friend visting Sialkot - and he went to the factory to pick up the bat at my request

He arrived back to the US yesterday n visited me last night to hand over the bat.

I swear to God the bat looks ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR !! Itís still sealed in the plastic. I picked and it felt heavier than 2 lbs and 6 Oz - itís impossible to have this size of bat at 2 lbs n 6 Oz - the edges are 40 mm, minimum concaving and a thick toe.

I think itís at least 2.8 if not 2.9

My scale is broken so I canít weigh it. (Just ordered a new kitchen scale).

So I asked my friend how was the trip?

He said, since he was visiting from the U.S., they gave him a special factory tour.

They showed him a batch of 3 bats  made for some international player of Pak team. So my friend said that the bat that was made for me had a small blemish on the face so he asked them if he could pick one from that batch instead? They said itís up to u since you are our guest from abroad. So he picked the one he thought was the best looking and lightest one. And he left mine there.

I have to weigh the bat and then send an e-mail to Waqas to either ship me my original bat or whittle me a new one.

But to be honest with you, I think my demand was unfair and unrealistic to begin with.

How can you have a full size bat with 38 mm edges in 2 lbs n 6 Oz?  lol.
But who knows if they have sent my original bat to you ??? 😀

I will post the pics ASAP

So here are some pics taken by my cell phone.

The edge size is around 42 mm if you look closely - I wonder how would it have passed the ICC clamp for an international player? This is too big.
Toe is a monster at 35 + mm in the middle
65 mm spine
There is no concaving.

I took it to my local grocery store and put it on scale - and no wonder it's 2 lbs and 10 Oz. I knew it, there was NO WAY in the world it would have been even close to 2 lbs and 6 Oz. That's impossible.

Yes, the bat is a monster, and picks up extremely light, *BUT* I am slightly disappointed. It's not the weight that I wanted. I would rather had it with 35 mm edge with reasonable concaving and perhaps a thinner toe but in 2.7, if not 2.6.

This one still looks like a great bat though - it's huge !

Did you check the width? Bat makers reduce the width to make bats (with thicker edges) pass the clamp test.

The gauges are around 41-42mm plus are a bit wider too, to allow for scuff sheets and lots of edge tape on a 40mm edge bat and tape measure isn’t the best way to measure so it isn’t too unbelievable

Yeah this looks to be good one; however, I am not sure if I have a frequent use for it or should I leave it packed and sell it as Brand New?

What were your specs?
I hope you get at least close to what you wanted if not exact. I think with these prices and this quality, we canít complain much - itís not a bad deal after all.

Today I got a quote from Pak origin Australian bat ďSmasherĒ (as used by Asad Shafiq), they asked AUD$895 plus shipping -  IMO, thatís.  ********* Ridiculous !! ******** for a cricket bat.

Ordered two bats one 2.7 and one 2.8 when they had their sale.  Turned up really quickly downside both bats weigh in excess of 2.10 so not exactly what was order.  I have emailed Waqas and his response was rather poor.  The bats are huge in terms of size, however I was after the weight and didn't really care how big it was.

My request was fairly basic... 2.6 in size SH... I ordered their top of the range AS Champ bat. For A$150 delivered here in Brisbane from Sialkot... I am not sure how it can be the top bat.

At this price I will be happy with 2.8 or lighter

This happened to me last year. I ordered two bats both 2.8 but when they turned up, both were 2.13-2.14. I couldnít even pick them so sold them for losses. I might go for MB bat that @ibrartariq got.

I placed an order over the phone in India. I asked for lightest bat and guy sent me photos of part finished saying thats lightest he got. My parents brought bat to Uk so saved me shipping charges too.
Bat in weight is not lightest but the feel is. Its amazingly big for its feels and plays well too. I recently put video under title "Net Video" so check it out to see how it performs.

I'm not surprised, you really need a good relationship or have someone pick them up for you.

@Sitonit why didn't your friend just stick with the bat that was made for you? Maybe its just me, but am surprised they would give a cleft like that to sponsored players. Not trying to be negative just my observations... I'm expecting a bat from AM in the next few days that was for an international player and having seen pics of it, the bat is very grainy and straight grains on face. See if I can post pic. Will get back to you what weight it is when I get it but I've been told 2lb 7oz.. remains to be seen.

I am a bit lost on this thread - I totally loved the AS Champ that started it all, although still lost as to why it has no front sticker.

The it became a mythical unicorn thread where you can order a bargain bat with amazing dimensions at an incredible weight, but it appears to arrive much heavier than expected? (a bit like Tinder I guess)

My key take away is - lovely bats, decent price, thin handles but the weights are a lottery (and your mate can swap what you actually ordered for something else even when/if you do get it right)

So to answer your first question.
I removed the front stickers just to see if there was any knot or blemish? And then I thought, what the heck, I will oil and give the knocking to the entire face (from top to bottom)

So to get this bat, I waited for about two years - I had placed my order and asked them that I am not in a hurry, just get me a bat in this dimension. So finally a super light cleft arrived in their stock and they whittled the bat.

And this got me spoiled.
I placed an unfair and unreal demand to get another bat in 2 lbs and 6 Oz with 38 mm edges and tons of extra meat; however, it's not all my fault. The factory should've told me straight up that your demands are ridiculous, and we can't make such a bat. I now doubt that the actual bat that was made for me (the one that had a blemish and was rejected by my buddy) would not be 2 lbs and 6 Oz either. It's an unrealistic demand to be honest with you.

So instead of meeting my unfair demands, they might have made a bat according to my specs BUT did not consider the weight. How nice! Were they just trying to make a sale? tried to teach me a lesson? They are too dumb to read and understand all requirements? I don't know the answer.

Yes, bat prices are definitely a bargain. There is absolutely no doubt in that. The bat that I received, is too good to be true for $150 shipped. This is what? £118 for a brand new G1 bat.
I am slightly disappointed that I got a 2.10 but at the same time I remain somewhat at peace when I get quoted AUD$ 895 plus AUD$ 75 shipping for a Smasher bat that will be AT LEAST 2.8 (nothing lighter than that) - that's what? £555.00 for a damn cricket bat?

At the end, I think it shouldn't be too hard to resell the AS bat, and get my money back.

I think AS still remains a good option as long as you are fair and reasonable in your specs. Probably 2.10 is an average weight for a good bat made by AS.

This is the problem. It is just a common issue. People shouldnít expect low density cleft for $150 and stop making unrealistic  requests. Either spend big bucks on low density cleft bats or expect a very dry bat.

If it took you 2 years first time around?

Why did  you expect the new one straight away? I don't think the request was unrealistic... I think that you thought they have these clefts piled high and laying around... is what was unrealistic. Your friend chose the bat and you still haven't seen the original bat?

Nope, haven't seen the original bat.
But I am 99% sure it's not 2.6.

I am still curious though, so I will pursue to see if they still have it? If yes, I will take a look.

If i were u i wouldnt place unrealistic requests like that. Cause the thing is they're achievable. And the result is not something u would like. Maybe at first but u will regret it later. I paid a good penny to get the Ca dragon 50mm version specially made for myself from the Ca factory and they managed to get one made for me that weighed only 2lb8oz fully dressed. Yes 50mm edges barely any aoncaving and 2lb8oz! The problem was it was dried out excessively to achieve that weight and didnt last 6 months even with repairs every other game. U cant tell that its dried out when its new. Its only when u start to use it that u realize and by then it is too late to return it.
If u ask for unrealistic specs they will achieve them but u wont like the results. Trust me!

In my view, this is one of the best posts of the year! You can't expect a magical bat that defies  laws of physics, it just doesn't happen!

On the other hand, if you want a standard size bat that is going to perform like a mofo, look no further than a Keeley bat. But if you must experiment and have cash on hand, Kranzbuhler can do it for you.

If experience and wasted money has tought me something, it is that specs matter jack in the quality of the bat. My current bats are an SS master 500 butterfly that costed me 60gbp and a BB B4 LE that costed me 250gbp. Both of them have 35-36mm edges and 60-61mm spine with minimal concaving. Neither of them look particularly amazing either and both have 7-8 grains. And both of them are absolute beats!! Better than any 45-50mm monster sized bats i have wasted my money on. I love them so much now that i have been able to resist the urge to buy another bat for nearly 8 months now

Ohh yes Asians bats 101. Always ask the weight in grams. One thing i love about crown cricketer, each bat is individually marked with its weight in grams and that makes it super convenient for u as a customer to shortlist the bats u want

Sorry but I  call BS on a top grade bat posted for 150 dollars. Just doesn't add up... that bat picked by your friend looks grade 3 if that... sorry to delve into the whole grading thing... even if there were less grains... I'd expect them to be parallel. If AS are selling that as top grade then I'm really disappointed with them as I always thought of them as one of the more well known established brand.

Well to be fair the pakistani currency has recently taken a big hit. I was in lahore last month and the Ca plus 15000 player edition 7 star bats were only pkr 40k which is just over 200gbp now. And those are some of the most beautiful bats i have ever seen. The kind that are all sapwood and have 12-14 ruler straight and perfectly spaced grains. So i wouldnt put it past some of the other smaller brands to offer their best bats for maybe even less than that. Just back in feb my teammate bought an HS41 for 35k which now is less than 190gbp. The prices havent increased. The currency has taken a hit hence everything is cheaper now

Yes but tell me honestly that you think that bat is grade 1? Also they have to ship the clefts from the UK to Pakistan in the first place.

However yes i agree. The bat shown in pics doesnt look like a grade 1 bat at all. Grade 3 at best. If this bat was purchased from pakistan for 150$ then im afraid the customer was ripped off bad. These kinda bats are all over the market for less than pkr 10k

Clefts are inexpensive and labor is very cheap in pakistan. And like i said the currency has taken a hit. A common man there cant afford the best bat that costs 40k. But when u convert them into gbp it looks like peanuts

Bat grading based on "ruler straight grains" is a scam to rip off gullible customers. JS Wright has a total monopoly on the willow business and they and their buyers (bat makers and sellers) charge outrageous prices of bats made from clefts that don't cost more than USD 100. Customers also should share the blame where they blindly pay such high prices and demand NO standardization from bat makers.

You think we'd be having this discussion if bats were made to industry wide standards.

Sorry but in the last 15 years of dealing with AS, this was my first EVER bad experience.

We all have different opinions and experiences and everyone commenting here is right in their perception.

The only main thing is the "pick and feel" of the bat that you can't really test in buying online bat.

So far as the weight goes, now a days, buyers simply ask the seller to put it on a scale and take a pic, before finalizing the sale. So that's not really something that should be a bother point. But yes, I got a bad experience due to trust developed over the years. I am still digging down and in contact with AS to figure out what happened?

But again for a $150? I don't think I would have any problem in getting my money back so the risk is minimum in dealing with this kind of price and getting this size of bat. But I think I will struggle to resell a Keely bat (If I don't like it) for £400. My two cents.

Well don't be completely disheartened.

There are good manufacturers in Pakistan, but really shocked at AS, I used to hold them in high regard. They must realise they will lose long term business.

Still shocked that Sitonit's bat picked by his friend was going to be for a Pak player  :o Someone somewhere is telling lies, not even grade 3.

There is nothing wrong in buying a bat from pakistan.
We are forgetting thr fact that the opís bat was handpicked by his own friend.
I have just bought 2 bats from pakistan and both are as good as any top of end bats.
I requested 2,10 but mine dressed up was 2lb 11.5oz but it picks up like 2,10 so i dont mind that. Bat makers in pak does not have any magucal skills to make a bat in 2lbs 6 oz with the expectations that people put in front of them e.g. 41mm edges. And 65mm spine and very thick toe and all.
Generalising a countryís industry as a whole is not fair at all. You have bad and good everywhere.

I don't have 15 bats but I have the same feeling.
This bat at 2.10 is a monster with an excellent pick up, but then I have a couple of more in 2.7 and 2.8 so this may not have any use.

Again, the good deal is, it's only $150.  Shouldn't be hard to sell and get your money back in a market where supposedly "Top End Bats" are in freaking $800 range.

Today I spoke to MB Malik out of curiosity  after watching a YT video where they clearly admit to have a special machine that sucks the entire moisture out of willow to make it bone dry (gotta admit their honesty), in an attempt to meet the demand of light weight bats with big edges and no concaving.

lol - even they are asking anywhere from $500 to $700  for a 2.7 bat.

So this AS bat for $150, even a though surplus, is still a bargain.

Bro i dont know why you complaining so much, just have alook at bubber sher i posted in mb h pro thread. Nothing less thn g1 and costs the same as your as champ. Tbh if your friend made a mistake and picked up a bad bat then its not manufacturerís fault but rather your friendís.
No brand will give you a g1 for 150 dollars. if it performs well then you got a bargain and you should put all thoughts to rest, but if they supplied you a kashmir willow then you can call the guy and raise your concerns.
As far as mb goes, What you are quoating here about mb being $700 is totally wrong as none of their bats retail even close to that price but well below.

Their top of the range gold playinum is 45000 pkr which at todays rate is approx 320usd. I dont know who gave you 700usd quote.
Check picture below they posted today on their instagram.

this aint their top grade at all.
Here is what i bought from them and for 20000pkr but difference is i did not ask them to give me 2lbs 6 oz bat with 40mm edges and 66mm spine and spine into the toe along with full profile.
Be the judge yourself, although i might not be the biggest fan of AS but defaming a brand without taking a deep look into other factors is unfair.

Not that I totally disagree with you; however, I think there is also a hit or a miss probability when it comes to splitting it. Bat could split due to being dry but chances of splitting are much hire when it's not pressed reasonable enough.

The bat which originally started this thread has been quite an extensively used in the last 4 months. At least 3 batsmen (friends) in my team use this bat in every innings. There are times when I wasn't able to play with it because the batsman on the other end was playing with it and he happened to be the top scorer of the season.  However, the bat is well alive and kicking some a$$ without any problem. The only thing got worn off is the grip - which I have changed.

44mm edge
35mm toe centre
20mm toe edges
Zero concaving

No doubt itís 2.11

Mine's arrived, must say this thing really surprised me for the price I paid!

At $60, well worth it. 11-12 grains, with some quirky dark line right in the middle  :D

Heartwood on one side, 40+ mm edges with some concaving, feels a lot lighter than 2lb 9oz.

But boy does this thing ping! massive forgiving middle. Must say real soft pressing, so will require some knocking in. You will see seam marks when I bounced the ball, if you zoom in on the 1st pic.

I will oil it tonight, so may be will gain an Oz. If this thing lasts even a season, would be well worth it.

Mine is here as well, but the cleft does not look like a top end cleft.

I have dropped an email to them and awaiting for their response.

It is quite close to the specs I asked for baring the skinny round handle (I have started putting tape on it to bring it to desired shape), but quality for cleft is not good no way near a g1.

Will try to post pics later.

I am not saying that its good or bad for that money, my point is this cleft does not look like a top end cleft.
I specifically asked for a cleft with no heartwood and as I said I think they did good job when it comes to the profile and specs.

They could have easily told me that they do not have a cleft that matches my requirements and we could have negotiated. And I requested for Pics multiple times.
As a consumer, I believe the maker/seller should have been truthful when it comes to online and international purchase, It's very similar to going to a tailor and asking for a blue jacket and he comes up with a black one, or one with a totally different size (Analogy is not straight but i guess you can get my point)
Then would you have been saying the same thing. They could have told this to me upfront that this cleft has a heartwood and we could have negotiated form there.

I guess this is a way how a good or a honest business works.

It looks like a G4 bat. Reasonable for $100 but I question whether it would have even been considered as an option if they weren't claiming these a 'top grade'

I agree the specs being requested are quite a lot, but if they can't meet that spec in a top grade bat then as said above, be honest about what you're selling.

Exactly my point, how can a company or a manufacturer with such credentials put their of best in the range for such an end product.
I am still awaiting their reply may be that's what they consider it Pro grade or low density I am still open for a conversation with them.

I do not understand why people are stuck with the cost here, Please try to understand they are marketing them as pro level or top of the line bats.

But I guess it's not that bad to be G4, but certainly not a G1

Can you not forsee that the price may indicate that a bat won't be a super duper pro whatever??? I mean that's half a GM Signature, the one true value bat :D You are allowed to take it with a pinch of salt and temper expectations based on all the available information when buying... It is not about cost but what I donít understand is people expectations are unrealistic. Expecting 12-15 grains clean cleft for this cost is unrealistic. To me, these are good Bats for the price point.

Was waiting how long till someone trotted out that line. A bat looking like that should never, ever be a top grade. I'd be surprised if it was even a G4 cleft.

"Premium Quality English Willow Bat
9+ Straight Grains"

To me, that bat has none of those things.

I'm not denying the price point isn't reasonable, just saying that in my view they should not be considered top grade. As soon as you take that into account it brings into consideration other lower grade bats from other manufacturers.

To me, that bat has none of those things.

9+ Straight Grains could mean cosmetic incentive and perhaps an entry level requirements to be "Premium Q E W"
But the pressing and moisture could make a grade 4 bat better perform better than Premium Q E W"

So my point is, do we pay £500 or £700 for a premium quality bat just because it has a lot of clean grains? If not, then it's a fair play between all grades of willow.

In my opinion, the number of grains and how pleasing the bat looks to the eye doesn't really matter THAT much so and so that we jack up the price to several hundred pounds.
IMO, the ping itself of all grades of willow is not miles apart from each other. A G4 (ugly looking cleft) could ping just as well as a £700 bat if both are made in the same exact weight and ran through the EXACT same process of bat manufacturing.

It's all about pick and feel.

As the great man says himself  starting at @1:50   I mean, he is not even worried about ping when it comes to feeling good about pick of a bat.

May be there is a drill hole, like a empty tunnel behind it, where they pulled out lots of fibers from the timber to make it light, and to cover the mark and put some naswaar color paint on top of gypsum coating?

I don't disagree with anything you have said in your post. Of course, performance is most important in a product that is used however as far as I'm aware no bat manufacturer has an objective or scientific way to measure performance. Anyone that claims to grade on performance is using another proxy to do so, whether that's density, grain structure or a combination.

I am making the point, though, because the price of this AS 'top grade' was being compared to other top grade bats, made elsewhere. We're not comparing apples with apples. Generally speaking, and I've seen a lot of bats, Pakistani manufactured bats are inferior in the finish, handle quality and they also have a penchant for lots of wood filler.

Yes I agree but I am not sure if this actually IS their "TOP GRADE" bat or they just put the stickers of their top grade bat to our custom bat requests?
In my specs I CLEARLY told them that I don't care what grade of willow it is and how ugly it looks.

But that was a double whammy that hit me. The weight specs did not meet and the bat is over sized (42 mm edges and no concaving) for my liking, and the timer looks ugly anyway. lol

Who cares about grains! If the bat pings and the weight is right for you, then that is all that should matter.

We should have a CBF wide drive to encourage and procure cheapest but pingiest bats. Time to do away with the day-light robbery that is the bat grading system (grains my behind!).

This is somewhat tricky.

Small business is EXTREMELY HARD to run in UK.
So the small manufactures in UK struggle to match with the prices of manufacturers in Asia where labor cost is dirt cheap and there are always loop holes to avoid business taxes.

So UK manufactured stuff will be about double the price of what you get in Asia.
There could be other extreme examples but thatís about the average difference which is a fair play.

Also,  chances of pulling cheap tricks in manufacturing the bats are less likely to happen in UK made products vs Asian made bats.IMO.

UK manufacturers tend to take pride in their products while many Asian manufacturers only focus on making money.

However, when it comes to prices like £700 for a UK made bat then the price may not justify the value and performance of the bat.
Such products (not just the cricket bats but many other consumer products) become a show off symbol, or they are for those who have too much extra money to waste and they donít care how much it costs, or sometimes itís for those foolish buyers who believe, everything that glitters is gold.

An experienced bat purchaser will always know what to get and how much to spend.

This is somewhat tricky.

???!!!!

Why overcomplicate this process? Just keep it simple: 1.) cost in local currency; 2.) converted cost in USD and conversion rate (for the record); 3. quality of ping; 4. clean basic build - we can agree on a baseline standard/metric (handle quality - for example 10 piece cane blah blah, weight, lack of filler/bleach, english willow , etc.).

This way we can compare apples to apples.

If my friend's in-laws' cousin brings me an English made bat when he returns from his England trip, why would I price the shipping cost, import duties etc.?

For an apples to apples comparison, we need to start with basic price in local currency. We can clever about this and agree on some form of a standard.

We'd do ourselves and bat buyers a huge service by formulating a method for picking optimal bats.

The starting point of the apples-to-apples comparison should be the base price + a few other elements.

I import 99% of the bats. I paid duty only once when a numb nut put the full value of the bat on the customs form. Those additional surcharges have no relevance to my bat buying experience/process.

Yet again, I'll bite... the current system is in favour of the savvy consumer, not against. Imagine all bats are somehow assessed accurately for rebound and graded accordingly - the best performing bats will be wildly expensive and if you want one, you've got no alternative but to stump up.
Currently, they're priced on looks. Fools are gladly parted with their money at M&H etc, sensible CBF'ers seek out grade 3 cannons at bargain prices. Everyone has an opportunity to own a great bat, how terrible!

It takes a huge amount of time (and money) to become a 'savvy consumer'. This is not a car that you can test drive at a dealership.

Lets  think bigger for a change and imagine a world where all bats are standardized so that consumers don't have to spend years becoming a "savvy consumer". In those circumstances, your time would be spent improving your skill and enjoying other things rather than buying, waiting, oiling, knocking a piece of willow. It'd be nice if the sport and its followers joined the 21st. century.

Quote

False premise. There is no shortage of G2/G3/G4 willow. If all of it was pressed correctly and fitted with basic good quality handles (without fillers and junk), we'd have a market full of G2/G3/G4s that will be priced pretty uniformly. I have yet to see a baseball bat that is graded as "ultra-light, low density, G1+++ PLAYER GRADE " bull sh**. Not once. Baseballers focus on their skills, play time, and other good things. Serbian, Kashmir willow would make market even more competitive. The day bats are standardized, price will be become normal (read: cheap and not the bs prices we pay thanks to JS Wright's monopoly)

Sad thing is that a bat buyer doesn't always end up with a "great bat" because you really don't know what you are getting until you hit balls with that bat. Bat buying process lacks standardization. It is a crap shoot.

So if a G4 willow is pressed correctly, and then a ďG1 +++++ Prograde ultra lightĒ BS willow that looks nicer to the eye, is also pressed correctly, and both bats end up being in the exact shape, weight and size then, would there be an ASTRONOMICAL difference in the ping?

No! We need to encourage as many people as possible to buy bats based on how they look rather than how they play. Its only because so many people pay over-the-odds to get bats with 12 perfectly straight grains that those of us who don't really care about aesthetics are able to get a bargain by getting 2nd/3rd grade bats that ping just as well but for half the price.

The player does not play with the AM livery... Also players who have played with AM bats as sponsored players include Younis Khan, Misbah, Afridi and Muhammed Wasim... They just don't have the same profile in recent years. If its been good enough source of bats for them it's more than good enough for me. In fact its a beauty!

https://st3.cricketcountry.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Misbah-ul-Haq.jpg

I am sure the player does source some of his bats from all over the place.

I was offered it plain but I was happy to put AM stickers on as it was them who made it...

Just like the other thread saying Kholi mainly uses SS, but I'm sure he uses a wide variety of bats... I've seen photos of him with blank CA.

Cricket bats should be exempt especially in places with low-to-no market or industry. They are low value items that most people in the world wouldn't know what to do with.

Even if duty was exempt it would still not match the rebates bat manufacturers in Asia are granted.

Really? What about that ? You didn't pay your customs duty out of "duty"? Why didn't you do your part in funding "public services?

Frankly, thats a dumb assessment and an even dumber question to ask.

The answer is simple and straight, I didnít try to cheat the system by devaluing the cost of my purchase.
There was a sales receipt attached to the package and it had full price of the item clearly marked.

I spoke to a custom officer who asked what is it? And. I truthfully replied as to what it was.

It was then her job and her discretion to assess whether there is a duty or tax on it? I think she knew the U.S., custom laws more than you and I. And I think U.S, and U.K custom and import duty/taxes laws are different.

And if there was a duty or tax on my item, she wouldíve charged me 100% of it because she wasnít my ďpuphi ki beytiĒ
But since there wasnít any US duty or import tax on the item, I wasnít asked to pay any.

How hard is it to understand?

Just a quick update on my bat.

Gave two coats of oil, knocked in for probably couple of hours with special attention given to the sharp edges. It was so soft, very easy to dent. Also applied scuff sheet.

To counter the weight, put significant amount of counter balancing. Used an old grip and cut it into small pieces for counterbalance (Thanks to advice by Aussie fast bowler).

It is now 2.12

So had a nets session today. Must say that i m really happy with it so far

There are no dumb questions only dumb answers and yours (above) fully qualifies.

They didn't charge you even if there was a full price listed? So, technically, cricket equipment is duty exempt whether value is listed or not. Why the hell were you jumping up and down in the other thread claiming moral high ground?! I paid more on a cricket bat duty then you did on your rickety setup, so you should STFU.

Reviving this old topic. AS have started a sale again and since i was visiting pakistan i thought i would take the opportunity to order 1. I have kept my requirements realistic and very much gettable. They have promised delivery tomorrow. Heres what i asked for.

1. Top grade blemish free AS Champ profile
2. No heartwood and straight even grains (even if its just 6 grains)
3. Finished weight of less than 1200g (2lb10.3oz)
4. Medium thickness oval handle.

They have asked for approx gbp80

Lets see what they can come up with

I donít think they use English Willow. Regardless of cheap labor and exchange rate, cost of English willow is significantly high.

If this isnt english willow then i dont know what is...

Anyways the owner had these 2 bats made to my requirements and asked me to choose. He assured me that both would be finished under 1200g but for some reason the batmaker forgot about the oval handle and made both in round handle. I can live with that and i told him that he can send me whichever out of these 2 pings better. Should be arriving tomorrow morning.

Some manufacturers in the sub-continent are using European Willow and still calling it English Willow.  This willow looks good with many narrow grains, it even plays well for a short time but it is very brittle and soon breaks.  A lot of fake bats will be made form this wood. It grows wild on the rivers of Europe and has to deal with extremes or heat and cold which makes it very slow growing. It is very hard to tell a European Willow from an English Willow bat, generally European willow will be very narrow grained and have a lot of red colour as per the photo, but not always. If the bat is branded and too cheap to be true it could be European Willow.  Photo of European Willow tree here and European Willow cleft.

I know what European willow is mate. And like i posted above, its not narrow grained, no heartwood, if these arent english willow bats then i will go ahead and challenge every single bat out there marketed as english willow

Sub £100 from Pakistan is more than achievable considering the volumes of clefts the large brands buy.

If GM can make a 404 in Nottingham for less than £100 then I have no doubt something similar is more than do-able in Pakistan.

The bit Iím struggling with is Ďtop gradeí

Iíve seen plenty of Pak made bats at this price point that are always promised as top grade and almost always look like this. Then thereís the handles to consider, usually poorly made and ill fitting, this is quite a generalisation but itís usually the case in my experience

404? I bought this for GBP127 plus postage!

It really isnt that hard to fathom that a top grade english willow bat can be made available in Pakistan for gbp160 (remember there is a limited time 50% off sale from AS which i made use of).

What really baffles me are the companies who charge north of GBP400 for their bats even though most production is in india where labor conditions are pretty similar to Pakistan

For £127 that bat has been sold at a loss by the retailer, itís not really a reflection of where bat pricing is at

Is it really at a loss to the manufacturer though? Think about it. I have been in Lahore (one of the biggest and most commercial cities of pakistan) for the last 20 days. Visited dozens of cricket shops and found that 100% of them either stock CA, MB, Ihsan or unstickered bats. There are so many great bat companies in pakistan but nobody stocks them. Imagine: one of the best batsmen we have produced in recent times is sponsored by HS, yet not a single retailer is stocking the HS 41 bat. Even our captain in all 3 formats is an HS guy yet i didnt see a single HS core 5 bat in any retail stores. Everyone i asked, said "we only stock CA or Ihsan because other brands dont sell". AS have recently resurfaced into the market since they sponsored Faheem Ashraf and Asif Ali. I think its a brilliant move on their part if they can sell a few bats at very low price and build their reputation through word of mouth so more people are interested in them and more retailers are stocking them

Did you read the part about what i requested them? There were plenty of 10-15 grainers but almost all of them had heartwood and heavier than 2lb11oz in the champ profile. I told them i want zero heartwood and sub 2lb10oz weight even if it has only 6 grains and they did exactly that. And the sale price is closer to gbp80 not usd80.

They will sticker it up as a champ even if it technically isn't a champ going by their own definition.

I am hoping to go to Pakistan next year, but unless I see something special or go to Sialkot I won't be buying a bat. If I do go to Sialkot I will more than likely be going to visit AM who I have had dealings with and get something custom, more to do with the fact I am there than anything.

I do agree there are many good brands outside of Malik, Ihsaan and CA, but it's no different to here, you have the big brands and smaller ones. An example that comes to mind are Hunts County who make great bats but GM, GN and NB/Adidas are everywhere.

I knew that was a possibility especially due to the 50% discount. Hence i made it somewhat easier for them and demanded something realistic. If they're going to stick the champ stickers on something I'd rather it be something that i can live with rather than a monster 15 grainer that weighs 2lb14oz. A slight twist in the tale is that the courier messed up my address and since i fly back tonight, i have told them to hold the bat at their airport office where i will collect it before checking in to my flight. So stay tuned until tomorrow morning for updates

I too bought a AS champ bat in last year's sale and that was G2 willow (45% heartwood) in my opinion.

I just wanted to know what is a decent price range in which one can buy a proper G1 bat made in Pakistan.

And also if someone buys an AS champ during the non-sale time for $ 200 should they expect a G1 bat?

I think if you buy them on regular price then it may be better quality and g1 bat.

I recently bought a MB bubber sher and it looks like a G1.

That's the key.
A poor friend bought it directly from the factory after looking at mine and broke it into two pieces within a week. He didn't knock it well enough.

Having knocked in 5 AS bats since last year (4 have been this CHAMP model, maybe due to some sale they had in the past) - The bats ordered on internet feel hollower/DRIER than the ones ordered in person.  All 5 bats have been in 2.10-2.12 range.

Only a relatively small set of data for the AS- 2 (picked from factory) VS 3 (ordered on internet) - NOW counting MFARANK's bat its 3 vs 3 now and all following the same pattern.

Very similar to RNS LARSONS - if you pick it in person its most likely a gun, order it online you wont have much fun  ;) Online ordered Larsons are so bad most  will start cracking while being knocked in properly .

Sitonit - did your friend pick the AS bat in person or ordered over the internet?

My friend ordered it in online.
The bat didn't seem over-dried or felt hollower to show signs of deterioration during the very little knocking that was done to it.
