Title: Which would you choose and why?
Post by: mohawks94 on September 06, 2018, 04:17:39 PM
B3 have been great since my new bat this season broke, and sent me a choice of two clefts to choose from to make my new one. I'm interested to know which one people would choose and why to see if opinions line up with my own!

Theyíre both stunners, one on the left for me as Iím not a huge fan of millions of grains or heartwood, but Iíd be happy with either.

Left, because I prefer a look of <50% heartwood

Heartwood and grains for early trampolining. Right one!

I'd be tempted by right but then choose left, I reckon. Or I'd ask the maker to choose whichever they thought would be best.

I'll throw it out there that when I showed my mother she thought the one on the right as it looked prettier.

Took me a good couple of hours to make my choice, asked about five different people for opinions.

Whichever is lighter in weight, I am guessing that will be the one with less heartwood portion.

The one on the left for me

One on the left
And I'd ask for the handle to be put in the bottom so the heartwood would be on the right handers inside edge (but that's just me)

One on the left personally, one on the right is just tad too much heartwood. How did you get in touch with them mate and how much is it costing you if you donít mind me asking

Just out curiosity why is it preferable to have it on the outside edge?

I said turn it upside down so the heartwood was on the inside edge... ;)

I'm glad that everyone seems to be agreeing with my logic. I went with the one on the left, because of less heartwood. I very nearly went with right because the strip of heartwood is a straighter line, but decided that the grains were still gorgeous on the left and I didn't want so much heartwood.

Can I also ask what grade or Stripe are these two clefts from B3 please

Nope heartwood's great, no problems with that at all - just preferred the grains on the other one.

Don't know, I'm only getting the one on the left! Don't need two more!

Both of them look good, But for me I would trust the batmaker to choose the best - you have to trust the people who deal with clefts etc on a daily basis.

Thats why you pay good money to a good batmaker.

It' will help prevent edge damage as heartwood is harder.

But the ball is just as likely to hit the inside edge as the outside edge, no?

Know you're just repeating a common opinion, but Hardwood is drier and crack more easily in my experience.

Only if you've got an unusually balanced technique and face equal amounts of inswing and outswing, which is unlikely! I know I certainly take more damage on one edge than the other.

@Kulli both are right I think, heartwood is certainly harder (a good thing if you ask me), but also definitely drier and more brittle.

I don't think so. All the bats I have for repairs/refurbs of teammates tend to have more damage on one edge than the other (usually the inside one, if that says anything?)

Inside edge - playing across the line/slogger
Outside edge - not getting to the pitch of the ball

No idea of the truth of it but that's what I was always told.

i'd want one with less heartwood in it.

So if you don't bother getting to the pitch and slog, you're in between the two and will middle everything? :D

Heart wood is magical properties for big hits!

I wish I could buy that cleft and have Tim Keeley shape it into an amazing bat for me. :D
