Title: Sean Ervine's Bats off eBay
Post by: bigc92 on February 28, 2019, 06:23:35 PM
Might have seen Sean Ervine sold a load of his bats on eBay this week. I think a few forum members got hold of them.
anyway, thought I'd post some photos of what I ended up with. I bought number 7 which was 2'7.5 with no grip. I've redone the facing and cleaned it up a bit. Now with a grip it weighs 2'9 and its pretty large. 43mm edges and 28mm toe.

Based on my limited experience, i think it is Kippax. I have something similar made by Kippax, it could be exact replica of this.

mine arrived today too, it is absolute belter - needs a bit of tlc, but really happy, esp as this is at least double the most i've ever paid for a bat, i'll take some photos tomorrow and upload

Iím thinking Kippax. Toe looks identical, and the handle looks right.

The profile does look a lot like a colossus to me. Is it a shorter blade longer handle?

I didnít take the plunge but boy was it tempting

Itís answered quite a lot of questions about a very decent international player as well.

Range of weight and makers from all over the world - stickers changed as sponsor changes.

His listing was a little haphazard when it first went on but by the end was much clearer and I bet he was bombarded with questions. But 6 bats at £160 isnít a bad weeks work.

the bat came in a golf club box - seems he has already been investing in some new golf gear!!!

Out with the old in with the new, 1st Kieswetter now him. Having solid hand eye coordination always helps.

i still do not get how he can play golf right handed - i get the thing that the swing can be bad for batting and i know others have done it (remember seeing Lara playing right handed in a video years ago), but i can't even swing the club when i try it!!!

Not that Iím anywhere near the standard of Sean Ervine, bought I play tennis left handed and write left handed. But play cricket right handed. To be honest I use to play tennis with both hands until a coach told me you need to pick 😂😂

Haha thatís exactly the same as me, didnít use to have a backhand. Left handed, right footed but bat and play golf right handed (despite my dad being a lefty so no idea why he didnít teach me the same).
Title: Re: Sean Ervine's Bats off eBay
Post by: dt-second-hand-cricket on February 28, 2019, 08:52:33 PM
to me that makes sense, i bat left handed, but i am purely right handed in everything else - i just find the thought of being able to bat left and play golf right off the scale!!!

i've tried a few times to swing a golf club that way when i was young, my poor left hand might as well have not been holding the club as the right hand hacked away at the ground like i was digging for coal!

I have a mate who bats left handed, plays golf right handed apart from putting which he does left handed and write right handed.

Freak!!!!

Last time I looked he had a couple left. One had no stickers, brown marks and toe damage, other was about 2lb 15oz.

The forum is funny.  I guess £160 for a decent condition bat isnít too bad but itís not going to score the runs for you.  Theyíre worth the money people are willing to pay for them but if it had not been mentioned who they may have belonged to then some of the poor condition/damaged ones may have ended up in the ebay tat section!😂

think it also sums up ebay - how much tat is sold on there as 'pro' kit etc and it seems to go for more than 160 - i still cannot believe Morrischarly's bats go for what they do, e.g.

it is a regular SH, only damage was a small compression of the toe on the inside edge for a leftie - quick glue and clamp and you can only see the difference if you look down on the toe, face and edges in much better condition than i expected (no dents/compression etc)

£170 seems a fair hit for a used bat that hasnít cost the seller anythibg, we want to know the ins and outs of a cats (No Swearing Please) on here when someone lists a used bat with pics from all angles, edge sizes, handle girth and god knows what else before offering 40% less than its advertised for!

Very true, couldnít sell and brand new GM signature with different stickers for basically half price but a few used and in some cases busted proís bats sell for more than brand new custom options from sponsors or flavour of the month brands. Hell im not for one second telling people how to spend there money and in some cases itís great to own a actual pro bat as cricket nerds but makes a mockery of what some believe is a good deal

I completely agree with you. Usually, EBay is a gamble. But after looking at these pictures, they look pretty decent. G1 these days cost around £250 so these bats donít look such a bad deal. I agree with @Ayrtek Cricket about how P letter change the people perspective but I personally donít think I can do justify buying Pro bats.

I'm really not sure how much better they can be? You can only get so much out of a bit of wood! They don't look bad bats tbf, but won't 'ping' much (if any) better than anything else. Each to their own tho, you pays yer money.....

depends on perspective totally, and it was a gamble, but look at others in that price range on ebay and for £170 posted it is a decent deal, here are some similar 'pro' and expensive bats and looking at these i feel i have got a good deal -

Ben Stokes NB - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tim-Keeley-Cricket-Bat-12-Piece-Cane-Handle-Pro/233038565700?hash=item36422e5144:g:ysIAAOSwxPpcC~tB:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tim-Keeley-Cricket-Bat-12-Piece-Cane-Handle-Pro/233038565700?hash=item36422e5144:g:ysIAAOSwxPpcC~tB:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

an actual TK - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tim-Keeley-Cricket-Bat/223421267911?hash=item3404f1ffc7:g:OLAAAOSwpZNcaq~f:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tim-Keeley-Cricket-Bat/223421267911?hash=item3404f1ffc7:g:OLAAAOSwpZNcaq~f:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

M&H - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Millichamp-and-Hall-CK22-cricket-bat-SH-2-8/153226098269?hash=item23acfcb65d:g:R9AAAOSwOIlby3FV:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Millichamp-and-Hall-CK22-cricket-bat-SH-2-8/153226098269?hash=item23acfcb65d:g:R9AAAOSwOIlby3FV:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

Kippax 1 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2018-Wavex-Kippax-Colossus-Cricket-Bat-only-used-once-excellent-condition-SH/173733016629?hash=item28734b7435:g:VU0AAOSwl7dcNzoD:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2018-Wavex-Kippax-Colossus-Cricket-Bat-only-used-once-excellent-condition-SH/173733016629?hash=item28734b7435:g:VU0AAOSwl7dcNzoD:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

Kippax 2 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kippax-Colossus-Sh-Bat-Just-Been-Refurbished-By-Kippax/192820792906?hash=item2ce503ce4a:g:otQAAOSwXHpcX-mQ:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kippax-Colossus-Sh-Bat-Just-Been-Refurbished-By-Kippax/192820792906?hash=item2ce503ce4a:g:otQAAOSwXHpcX-mQ:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

the only difference is the claim that they have been 'serviced' - most are more expensive and just as big a gamble - but without the potential chance that they might be the best wood i am ever going to get my hands on - and if it is not for me - still has some resell value as it can be sold as a 'top grade Tim Keeley bat' in the future

the one i got took me 30 mins to sand and fix a little knock, can use it in nets straight away - i personally am not good with new bats, the last time i got a new one was 2005 and that was a present - i think it took 3 seasons for me to feel 'right' playing a league game with it - against the league 'brick' balls i faced - totally psychological but i ended up using the bat about 50 times over 5 years or only in games where the balls were good quality readers/dukes - and then selling it before i moved abroad for work for about 25% of the cost of what the person who brought it for me paid for it - i still feel guilty just thinking about that!!!

Ridiculous - or aimed at the private school brigade! Almost feel like removing my distinction from eBay, saving it for 5 years and it'll be 2k  :D

Anyway back to the post if only the bats had slug written on the toe with a sharpie

depends on perspective totally, and it was a gamble, but look at others in that price range on ebay and for £170 posted it is a decent deal, here are some similar 'pro' and expensive bats and looking at these i feel i have got a good deal -

Ben Stokes NB - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tim-Keeley-Cricket-Bat-12-Piece-Cane-Handle-Pro/233038565700?hash=item36422e5144:g:ysIAAOSwxPpcC~tB:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tim-Keeley-Cricket-Bat-12-Piece-Cane-Handle-Pro/233038565700?hash=item36422e5144:g:ysIAAOSwxPpcC~tB:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

an actual TK - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tim-Keeley-Cricket-Bat/223421267911?hash=item3404f1ffc7:g:OLAAAOSwpZNcaq~f:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tim-Keeley-Cricket-Bat/223421267911?hash=item3404f1ffc7:g:OLAAAOSwpZNcaq~f:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

M&H - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Millichamp-and-Hall-CK22-cricket-bat-SH-2-8/153226098269?hash=item23acfcb65d:g:R9AAAOSwOIlby3FV:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Millichamp-and-Hall-CK22-cricket-bat-SH-2-8/153226098269?hash=item23acfcb65d:g:R9AAAOSwOIlby3FV:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

Kippax 1 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2018-Wavex-Kippax-Colossus-Cricket-Bat-only-used-once-excellent-condition-SH/173733016629?hash=item28734b7435:g:VU0AAOSwl7dcNzoD:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2018-Wavex-Kippax-Colossus-Cricket-Bat-only-used-once-excellent-condition-SH/173733016629?hash=item28734b7435:g:VU0AAOSwl7dcNzoD:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

Kippax 2 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kippax-Colossus-Sh-Bat-Just-Been-Refurbished-By-Kippax/192820792906?hash=item2ce503ce4a:g:otQAAOSwXHpcX-mQ:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kippax-Colossus-Sh-Bat-Just-Been-Refurbished-By-Kippax/192820792906?hash=item2ce503ce4a:g:otQAAOSwXHpcX-mQ:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true)

the only difference is the claim that they have been 'serviced' - most are more expensive and just as big a gamble - but without the potential chance that they might be the best wood i am ever going to get my hands on - and if it is not for me - still has some resell value as it can be sold as a 'top grade Tim Keeley bat' in the future

the one i got took me 30 mins to sand and fix a little knock, can use it in nets straight away - i personally am not good with new bats, the last time i got a new one was 2005 and that was a present - i think it took 3 seasons for me to feel 'right' playing a league game with it - against the league 'brick' balls i faced - totally psychological but i ended up using the bat about 50 times over 5 years or only in games where the balls were good quality readers/dukes - and then selling it before i moved abroad for work for about 25% of the cost of what the person who brought it for me paid for it - i still feel guilty just thinking about that!!!

Although I can see what you mean, highlighting overpriced bats doesn't mean these stack up for me, just that these bats are overpriced too. One of those Kippax bats is listed as 2018 when it's clearly older. I just don't think the 'Pro' bats are necessarily any better than what you can get elsewhere. If anyone had picked up one of Ali Cooks 'pro' bats, you'd be buying an OTS Gray Nics as apparently he just picked them out of the rack at the factory. No doubt it would be great to have one of his old bats, but the quality would be the same as any other Gray Nics, with any improvement in 'ping' being purely psychological in my opinion.

That said that look decent and as long as the buyer is happy and think they're value, then that's all that matters. Hope they go well for you guys!  :D

Think £160 for these bats is definitely good value.
Bargain for me is that I bought a top range bat for £140, while it's RRP is £425, brand new

Pretty much why I have never bought a bat off eBay. Rather buy a bat from a forum member here.
