Really interesting podcast with Simon Hughes, Simon Mann and John Emburey discussing who would make it into England's Best Ever 1 Day Team..... as ever there is certain criteria like adjusting era's etc... but when thinking about it we actually had some quite good players!

After lots of debate the team they 'agreed' upon -

1. Trescothick
2. Bairstow
3. Gooch
4. Root
5. Pieterson
6. Butler
7. Botham
8. Flintoff / de Freitas
9. Emburey
10. Rashid
11. Gough

Hales and Roy before Trescothick and Gooch, for starters, I think.

I'd probably take Morgan before Pieterson too.

Gough and Flintoff worth their places.

Stokes before Botham.

Emburey? Dunno.

Allrounders, these are the biggest debate IMO because it's pretty crazy picking out of Botham, Flintoff and Stokes.

Others to consider - no one those 3 are all you need to consider

Spinners, Rashid is in as you need a spinner who turns it both ways, then it obviously depends on where you are playing and if you want to play 1 or 2, also your age a bit because a lot of people wouldn't have seen or necessarily associate Emburey with ODI's but his stats are excellent.

Others to consider - Ali, Swann

Bowlers, Gough is a certainty for me and perhaps the only real out and out quick bowler you can pick?

Others to consider - Anderson, Plunkett, de Freitas, Broad

Batting, Top Order really depends how much you are taking into account the eras because i can see why Gooch & Tresco are in The Cricketer's side because they were excellent batters and both average near the same (high 30's) as Hales & Roy, the only difference being the obvious higher strike rates of the modern players. The exception is Bairstow who averages 51 due to his amazing recent performances.

Others to consider - Knight, Trott

Middle Order - Pieterson has to play, doesn't matter what you think of the bloke, he was our best ODI batsman for a very very long time. As well as Root who gives some solidity to the team.

Others to consider - Morgan, Lamb, Bell, Collingwood

WK - Butler, simples

So my team is -

Bairstow
Trescothick
Hales
Root
Pieterson
Butler
Stokes
Botham
Flintoff
Rashid
Gough

Trescothick was/is an incredible one day batsman.  Pietersen likewise has to be in there.

Would probably pick Morgan or Fairbrother as a middle order leftie with gusto.

Loved watching Swann bowl, but Rashid has a great record in ODI's and is a quality batsman as well, Emburey's record is great - hard to choose.

Would also have Gough and Broad for certain.

Derek Underwood to bat at no.11, get some New Balance shoes, and take part in modern fielding drills?

32 ODI wickets at 23.

A seam bowling attack of Botham/ Stokes/ Flintoff/ Gough?

That's one big dressing room you'll be needing.

i genuinely couldn't pick from Botham, Flintoff and Stokes - so went for the cop out and picked all 3!

but i actually don't see an issue of that seam attack, you are correct about the dressing room though!

Wasn't really doubting the quality too much.
