Figured the best way to improve fielding is to LOVE it (that leads to "wanting the ball to come to you", anticipating better, etc etc). So who here loves to be in the field, and why do you love it? And who wants to help me fall in love with it?

When I started coaching I was, frankly, an awful fielder. I'd drop sitters and snag the odd blinder, but id often cost my team runs in the field. I realised I ought to practice what I was preaching, and put in the hard work and made myself enjoy it. Im now top of the catching charts at a much better club, including 5/6 catches that were completely reaction based, and was credited with saving Frogs about 30 runs boundary riding.

If you want to start enjoying fielding and being confident with the ball coming to you, take those extra ten catches etc.

I absolutely love fielding now, but wouldn't put myself into the cordon as that is where im at my weakest. Covers, point or mid wicket are my usual grazing spots within the ring, or sweeping the boundary. I have felt like a specialist fielder at times this season tbh.

I don't mind fielding, it largely depends on the atmosphere and the state of the game. Defending a score in a T20 game is generally the most enjoyable period in the field, especially if everyone else is well up for it and full of energy.

In terms of positions, I've fielded in most places. I spent several years in the slips but frankly I find it boring as you rarely see the ball. I prefer to field in front of square. Cover/extra cover/midwicket/mid off/mid on are all pretty similar.

But my ultimate preference is fielding out on the boundary, as I've got a decent arm and am pretty good under the high catches. The only downside is that it can be hard to skipper from there.

I would love to but sadly I suck big time at fielding..I am the specialist square leg fielder where I enjoy chatting with the leg umpire. I then get sent to third man, fine leg. I am also a specialist fielding at the 45 for the spinner. :D

I love fielding.  My when I was 14 and first played for our Under 18 side, the captain was a decent bat who played some second XI stuff for Derbyshire and he got across the message that as a batsman you can be out first ball so your only way to influence the game is through your fielding.  Clearly some people are naturally more athletic than others but I am a big believer that your mindset is as important as your natural ability. If you don't want to be out there, then you will let the side down and these are the people that damage the morale of the team when you are in the team.  As a captain, mentality in the field is something I take into account when considering selection.

Depends on the standard and the reason of the tea, fielding can be everything from a massive chore to great fun.

Detest fielding. I would be quite happy just to stroll around for 45 overs and the ball to come absolutely nowhere near me  :)

This could be down to the fact that I am comfortably one of the worst fielders to have ever embarrassed the game of cricket.

I have a strange relationship with fielding. Whilst my ground fielding is remarkably average, i'm a lot more mobile than i look, so i get 3/4 run outs a year as batsman try to pinch a single in the infield to the fat lad and often realise it's a mistake halfway down. I haven't got a massive arm though, so i very rarely find myself on the boundary thankfully.

Nine times out of ten, i'll be stationed at Gully as i've made it my specialist position having never dropped a catch in there. My catching is by far my best skill in the game (far better than my batting or bowling), i can count on one hand the amount of catches i've dropped. I put this down to the fact that when i was younger and fitter, me and a friend used to spend hour upon hour in the summer throwing ourselves around the garden catching tennis balls, even though neither of us played cricket! I also used to lob a ball against a wall when i was home alone as well!

Despite this, once i come out of gully as the ball stops swinging and we go more defensive, i find fielding mind-numbingly boring. The only reason i've started keeping is to try and stay concentrated in the field, as my mind wanders when i'm not bowling!

Love it.

I'm not a frontline bowler and i'm a lower order batsman so it's a great way for me to be involved in the game. I much prefer to field out in the deep positions behind the stumps and have made something of a specialism out of fine leg - i've saved countless boundaries in the position, ditto 3rd man.

I'm one of the younger and agiler members of the team so I enjoy haring around the outfield and diving about. Oddly though i've got the most catches at square leg which is a funny one as I never quite know where to stand.

To fall in love with it i'd say practice the basics and get used to stopping the damned thing when it's racing towards you, especially on uneven outfields where it can bobble around. If you're involved in the game you'll be a lot less bored and more engaged than if you wander around at deep midwicket for 40 overs.

I love it most of the time. Had one great season playing Saturday and Sunday afternoon friendlies where I willed the ball into my hands for 31 catches in I think is was 18 or 20 games.

Our second team captain loves to field first so once we've completed the innings he can have some grub and then sit on his (No Swearing Please) whilst we bat - he's a number 8 so he usually gets a good long rest.
