Gray Nicolls Shockwave Butterfly
« on: August 15, 2019, 09:56:17 AM »

Hi all. Just thought I would share a few pics of a new GN Shockwave butterfly that was sourced through Rob @Six Sixes Cricket for a young lad at my club as his first adult SH bat. Firstly as always service was superb from Rob with pictures sent and this ordered in specially as wasnt a model he stocked.

So this young lad has been playing in our 1st team this year and was to talk for his old Harrow. His dad who plays in our Sunday 2nd team-and knowing what a bat badger I am asked me about getting him a SH bat and my thoughts etc. Personally I was promoting the GM Signature as they have been amazing for me and I let him use my Noir for a couple of weeks and funny enough the lad scored more runs and mainly had more value for his shots from a bigger and heavier SH bat than his 2lb 3oz Harrow. He is also now about 5ft 9 or so.

Anyway he wanted a Shockwave as being 15 and ginger his favourite player is YJB so as Rob sorts our club shop I said to the dad I would speak to Rob and see what he had. The dads budget was about 100 so this 100 model fell into budget.
So its 2.9 the same weight as my Noir the lad was using and Rob ordered this in and as you would expect for a sub 100 English willow bat it wasnt going to be pretty. Or was it???

So this butterfly option has 9 straight grains through the front and back, 38mm edges with little concaving so its a big bat, it also really pings through the stain. The lad was a bit put off when he saw it but Iv assured him butterfly was fine and showed him some reviews online etc. He hates the fibretec sheet it had so removed that easily enough with a Stanley blade and will add a clear anti scuff.
The lads on holiday until next weekend so asked if I would start the knocking in process, which I explained to me is a few net sessions on the Bola. So with the wife away tonight I have a nice 2hr net booked with a mate at my club son will net with this and let you know how it goes.

Nothing wrong with that - lot of staining but if it goes well, that's what counts. Think it was Ben Foakes who said some of his best bats are the worst looking!

Thanks for the review Chris. It looked nice under the garish scuff sheet, the bottom stained did fly so with a couple of hours netting this will be a great bat for 85. Really hope it goes well for the lad

This is a good thread!

We need to appreciate the ugly ones as they can be amazing values.

Personally I only buy G2 or below now as the price for G1 is mental and I have plenty of stunners in low grades and all perform very well

So had about 90 mins actual net time tonight with this bat and its superb, its a very forgiving shape with a very long middle. There is a feeling that the blade is hard when you get one right into the stain mark but the ball still pings off just makes a bit of planky sound. Very similar if anyone has ever used a modern Dynadrive from a few years back. Nearly all the net was against the Bola machine and balls but had 25 balls or so from slow half volleys and the same thoughts, performance is very good but the sound and the feeling can be a bit hard. Sure this will make a great bat but will take longer to really open up than non butterfly bats I think.  Personally never owned or used a butterfly bat with those pronounced stains before but I could be converted I think.

^ The sound bit is interesting.

I find that sound of a bat can be misleading about the ping. Some bats have a hollow, softer sound and other have a harder more bass-y sound. The ball however bounces to same height or with the same speed. One thing I have tried while testing bats is put earplugs on and just notice the (speed of ) bounce and distance of the ball off the bat face. Usually, I am surprised how different sounding bats send the ball to fairly same distance with similar speed. So, if you are comparing brands, I'd say CA v/s a Keeley or a new Keeley v/s a delaminated Keeley and an earplug tests weeds out the less bouncy/pingy bat.

Good to see that you can get a good bat for under 100 notes
